Canon's PIXMA MP600 has been the mainstay of its all-in-one range, so it'll be a hard act for the newly introduced PIXMA MP610 to follow. Both machines are intended for the small and home office markets, as colour all-in-ones for printing plain paper pages and photographs.

The MP610 continues the look of its predecessor; a sort of irregular octagon in black and silver, with elongated sides at front and rear. At the back is a near-vertical, 150-sheet paper feed tray and there's a separate paper cassette, again 150-sheet capacity, which slots in underneath from the front. The front cover folds down to make a paper-out tray and there's a CD/DVD carrier which can also be slotted in - though it's a bit fiddly - once an internal flap's been lowered.

A 62mm LCD folds up from the front lip of the scanner lid so you can view photo thumbnails from any memory card; there are slots behind a cover to the right of the output tray for all formats except xD, an odd omission. The control panel the LCD display reveals uses Canon's intuitive, rotating finger-disc for selecting menu options and there are context-sensitive function keys, too.

This multifunction printer, scanner and copier connects to mains power and a PC via a USB connection at the back, so there's very little difference from the MP600, so far. There are

worthwhile improvements, though. For a start, the optical scan resolution has been increased fourfold from 2,400 x 4,800ppi (pixels per inch) to 4,800 x 9,600ppi. Then there's Auto-Image Fix, which can correct for brightness, contrast and saturation in images you load and print directly.

The MP610 comes with a good suite of software, including PhotoStudio and OmniPage, and prints commendably quickly in most modes. A five-page text document took just over half a minute and, although we couldn't match Canon's claim for a borderless 15 x 10cm photo in 21 seconds, we did manage just under 40 seconds in standard mode, which is still good. The only fly in the speed ointment is the machine's duplex speed. Our double-sided print test took nearly nine minutes, due to enforced drying time between sides.

Print costs are reasonable, at around 1.8p for a black ISO page and 5p for a colour one, and print quality is excellent on both plain paper and in photos. There's plenty of image detail and colours are both natural and vivid when you need them to be. The device has separate black inks, tailored to text and photo prints.

Canon - PIXMA MP610 features - Verdict

While there's not a huge difference between Canon's PIXMA MP610 and the MP600 it replaced, the increased resolution in the scanner and improved automatic photo fixing are both welcome. Canon's range of all-in-ones remains one of the best on the market and the well-priced MP610 takes its place well.

Apple iPod Touch (second generation, 8GB)

As the less-gifted sibling of Apple's celebrated iPhone, the iPod Touch has had to work hard to prove itself. Now in its second generation, Apple has finally given the iPod Touch a chance to shine by lowering its price (an 8GB model now runs $229), improving the hardware, and practically doubling the features from last year's original model. Design
Apple's updates to the iPod Touch's design are subtle, but the hardware has definitely changed for the better. A slim volume switch now graces the left edge of the Touch, making it easier to make quick volume adjustments. The chromed steel back of the second-generation iPod Touch now mimics the rounded design of the iPhone 3G, giving the device a slimmer profile at its edges. Whether psychological or by design, the second-generation iPod Touch feels less fragile than last year's model and makes the plastic enclosure of the iPhone 3G feel cheap by comparison.

Minor improvements aside, the second-generation iPod Touch hardware is largely unchanged. Both the first- and second-generation iPod Touch share the same dimensions (4.3 inches by 2.4 inches by 0.31 inch), same glass-covered screen (3.5 inch), and same arrangement of headphone jack, dock connector, sleep button, and home button.

Apple's Cover Flow music menu is a bit useless on the smaller screens of the iPod Nano and iPod Classic, but it's a fantastic way to browse music on the iPod Touch.

Features
Priced at $229 (8GB), $299 (16GB), and $399 (32GB), the second-generation iPod Touch still commands a fairly high price compared with other MP3 players with similar capacities. When you weigh the price of the iPod Touch against its features, however, the device becomes much more attractive. Out of the box, the second-generation iPod Touch includes an amazing music player, podcast support, video playback (including iTunes rentals and a YouTube player), a Safari Web browser, photo viewer, an e-mail reader (compatible with Outlook, Exchange, MobileMe, Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, or any POP e-mail service), an integrated Wi-Fi music store, and a host of smaller utilities (weather, calendar, maps, stocks, notes, clock, contacts, and calculator). Provided you can become proficient with its touch-screen keyboard, the iPod Touch is more pocket PC than MP3 player.

As of version 2.0 of Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch firmware, the device's stock features are just the beginning. The new iTunes App Store, accessible from your computer or directly from the iPod Touch, lets users download and install thousands of applications, including Internet radio players, games, voice recorders, and social-networking tools. You can also extend the capabilities of the iPod Touch using third-party "Made for iPod" hardware accessories such as Bluetooth transmitters, audio/video docks, external battery packs, and speaker systems.

The second-generation of the iPod Touch also introduces Apple's new Genius feature, which lets you create an instant 25-song playlists based on the musical characteristics of a single song. If you find iTunes' Genius feature too demanding on your computer's resources or too invasive of your privacy (the feature reports your listening habits to Apple), then you'll need to live without the feature on your iPod as well.

Competing MP3 players like the Samsung P2 (right) do an admirable job emulating Apple's touch-screen control. But when push comes to shove, it's easy to tell which of the two companies has more experience with software design.

If you own a first-generation iPod Touch, you can spend $10 to upgrade its firmware to include all of the software capabilities (including Genius playlists) found on the second-generation model. There are three features, however, that you're only going to get on the second-generation Touch: a built-in speaker, Nike+ support, and headphone jack microphone input. The speaker included on the second-generation iPod Touch isn't visible from the outside and its sound quality is far from spectacular. Despite its poor quality, the addition of a speaker makes it easier to play games or listen to your morning podcasts without hunting down your headphones. We're also happy to see the inclusion of Nike+ functionality considering the popularity of MP3 players as workout companions. And if you're interested in making voice memos, an investment in a compatible iPod microphone headset (due out in October) will allow you to make voice recordings directly to the iPod Touch, provided that third-party developers begin creating voice applications specific to the Touch.

We're still disappointed that the iPod Touch still can't stream Flash video or audio content through its Safari browser; however, many of the Web's more popular content providers are working around the problem by creating specific App Store applications for their content (Pandora Radio and vSnax video are prime examples). We also can't help but crave the camera and GPS capabilities included on the Touch's close relative, the iPhone 3G. With any luck, a third-party manufacturer will step in with some clever accessories.

Apple is one step ahead of all Windows Mobile sales in Q3

Well, it's official - Q3 2008 saw Apple's only current smartphone, the iPhone 3G, outsell the numerous devices based on the Windows Mobile platform not only in USA but on worldwide scale. That's some surprising news, we bet Mr. Jobs is already throwing in a dinner party.

Despite the global financial crisis the smartphone market share is still growing (though at a slower pace than last year) and territories are being remapped. The third quarter of 2008 saw some really interesting changes in position.

Nokia is still king of the hill with 42.4% market share in Q3, but for the first time they have a decline in sales as compared to last year.

Windows Mobile has shamefully slipped behind Apple proving that sometimes it's not all about pumped up specs, but user experience and service integration count big time as well.

RIM's Blackberry devices are also growing in popularity having 81.7% more sales than last year's quarter. And they should do even better in Q4. Seems like the Bold and the Storm just might liven up the conservative facade of the brand.

Different OSes are changing market shares too. For the first time Symbian has fallen bellow 50% market share possibly because of the rise in popularity of touch-screen devices, which effectively lacked in the Nokia portfolio in Q3. Sony Ericsson's UIQ wasn't there to fill the gap either.

The now elederly WinMo will probably continue to suffer hard hits from the competition due to its inferior user-friendliness. The OS definitely needs a serious refresh and we really hope to see one soon.

But user-friendliness is only part of the game. The successful future of the smartphone platforms will also depend on building up better application portfolios, wider online services with easier and more intuitive access. AppStore or no AppStore, Apple's application business model is one fine example of delivering the right content straight to the device hassle-free.

Japan taps Better Place for electric car charging

Japan's Ministry of the Environment announced a program on Tuesday to test electric vehicles and a network of charging stations, some supplied by auto start-up Better Place.

The electric vehicle feasibility study will give local governments access to 50 electric cars for several months. Cars included are Mitsubishi Motors' iMieve, the Plug-in Stella from Subaru, the Honda Clarify fuel-cell vehicle, and the Erezo electric motorbike under development.

Better Place will install battery exchange stations in the trial. The deal in Japan is similar to those made recently with several countries, the city of San Francisco, and the state of Hawaii that have signed on with Better Place, which has developed a system to accelerate electric car use through battery leasing and automated swapping.

The trial is part of Japan's national goal of having electric cars make up half of all new vehicle sales by 2020. The program will also include a facility for rapid car battery charging.

Automakers say they need an infrastructure, such as charging stations in public places, for their electric car programs to take hold.

The first electric versions of familiar sedans from the likes of Nissan and others will start becoming available in 2010, but they will largely be used for testing. Broader availability of these cars will be in 2011 and 201

Sony Ericsson Kate gets a real model number - the C510

The Sony Ericsson C510 is a bar-shaped mid-range Cyber-shot that should hit the shelves in two months. Previously known in Rumor land as the Sony Ericsson Kate, we now finally have it's model number, a nice photo and the full specifications.

Recently there has been a lot of confusion over leaked photos of two Sony Ericsson handsets that will look almost identical - the Sony Ericsson Kate (now C510) and the Sony Ericsson Phillipa. We posted pics of the 5 megapixel Phillipa not long ago, taking it mistakingly for Kate. But now the confusion is over.

The Sony Ericsson C510 is armed with a 3-megapixel sharpshooter with auto focus and goodies such as face and smile detection. Unfortunately it only has a LED flash, as the xenon unit is reserved to the Sony Ericsson Phillipa. Traditionally for Cyber-shots, the C510 also has an active lens cover and camera shortcuts that light up when you need them.

The 120 MB of built-in memory is expandable with an M2 card, while the 2.2-inch QVGA display rounds off the specs.

Unfortunately, there's no word on pricing or planned availability.

The biggest reason for this seems to be that there have been so many graphics cards released over the past few months that this just seems like another one of them.
